1. Re the Killers -- My wife, who was of the generation that really liked Duran Duran, liked the Killers upon first listen, so I acquired the CD, and I found even I enjoy it, considering how much I hated Duran Duran. Other touchpoints I hear on the album are the Cure, the Cult, the Smiths, etc. They've got the '80s vibe down, but it's fresh enough to be original.
2. I was trying to explain to my mother that she'd seen the guy on House on various British PBS things. She professed no knowledge of Bertie and Wooster, which has me thinking she must have blocked it out for some reason. I haven't watched House yet, but during the baseball playoffs they constantly ran promos for it, which is why "YOU'RE RISKING THE PATIENT'S LIFE!" reminds me of the Red Sox. (Plus my wife got me sucked into Angel reruns, and Bertie reminds me of Wesley.)
The Killers also remind me of Roxy Music and Ultravox--no musically, but with their world-weary, quasi-noir presentation. (Of course, I'm just basing that on one video, so I may be off.)
Ah, Ultravox. Their "Mr. X" and "Western Promise" fit your description well. I used to fall asleep to that album (can't remember the name, and I don't have it on CD) with my headphones on in high school, and it was a bit old then. But those violins and synthesizers. I discovered them by listening to Live Aid. I probably still have the static-filled tape recording of their set from back then, nearly 20 years ago.
