Ah, Ultravox. Their "Mr. X" and "Western Promise" fit your description well. I used to fall asleep to that album (can't remember the name, and I don't have it on CD) with my headphones on in high school, and it was a bit old then. But those violins and synthesizers. I discovered them by listening to Live Aid. I probably still have the static-filled tape recording of their set from back then, nearly 20 years ago.
